"Umm, but there were a lot of things, lot of things that happened over there and, kinda of getting back to the, to the "how do I feel about the Civil rights movement?" and stuff like that... I remember an incident it kinda of brought to mind about how things even though you were in Vietnam things are still kinda of, you know , messed up. Umm, there was a guy in my squad and I, I I I think his name was Jones, but I'm not sure. And and what we would do is we had days where somebody had to walk point. And a point was a person that was out in front when we were humping through the boonies. And and after so many days your supposed to like I guess they would rotate you and you know send somebody else walking point. And um, Jones for a lack of better word probably was a person who just didn't do a lot of deep thinking I guess. And he was out there longer then what we thought he should be. The other two, me and another black guy. And so we went to the Sgt. and said "hey you know Jones is been walking point" and I can't remember "longer then he should be should've been. And we said "its you know time for him to rotate you know back." And then the Sgt. looked at me and this other black guy and he says "which one of the two of you gonna walk point". And, and we said almost in unison "We‘re not walking point and Jones is not walking point." Now in the middle of Vietnam in the jungle I mean that's somebody giving you a direct order and we're saying "no we're not going to do it." Because we felt that there was only the three of us in this particular squad and why are we walking point. And a I don't know whata happened if he hada said "one of you gonna walk" and I don't know what a would've happened because at that point we had decided Jones not gonna walk point anymore and we're not gonna. So and he looked into our eyes and it I think he saw well it wasn't worth it. And what happened, really and truly, there was a Hispanic guy there and can't remember what his name was. But he saw the tension what was going on with in there and he said "all right I'll volunteer what the heck I'll, I'll do it I'll take it." You know. And so we kinda said well you know "Jones not we're not". So he, he volunteeed to walk, walk point. I bet it wasn't three days later we were going across a stream and he got shot. So..."
