On May 6, 1945, a PB4Y-2 Privateer (bureau number 5944, nicknamed “The Vulnerable Virgin”), with a crew of twelve, took off from Yontan Airfield, Okinawa, to attack enemy shipping in the Yellow Sea. The Privateer flew alongside one other bomber, and together damaged and sunk several Japanese cargo and fishing ships off the west coast of southern Korea. One of the ships exploded while the bomber was passing over, and the aircraft was seriously damaged and forced to turn back to base. “The Vulnerable Virgin” continued on the long-range patrol mission but failed to return for unknown reasons, and was reported lost with its crew. Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class Jacobs entered the U.S. Navy from Ohio and served in Patrol Bombing Squadron 118 (VPB-118). He was a crew member aboard “The Vulnerable Virgin” when it disappeared on May 6, 1945. He was reported missing in action 6, May 1945 and later declared dead 7, May 1946. His name is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. Narrative researched and written by Hall of Honor staff.
