In June 1918, first elements of the 5th Infantry Division entered the trenches. During the next month, Division troops did an extensive amount of patrolling and raiding of German lines and numerous attacks by the Germans were successfully repulsed. It was during this action that Lieutenant Barnes received wounds as a result of enemy fire. He was subsequently wounded a second time prior to the end of the War.
