On September 2, 1944, a PBJ Mitchell (bureau number 35106) with a crew of seven from Marine Bombing Squadron 433 (VBM 433) participated in a heckling mission against enemy positions in Kavieng, New Ireland. The plane was last observed roughly five miles east of the northernmost point of the Kavieng Peninsula, but was not seen again and did not return to base. A search for the missing aircraft and crew was conducted the following day with unsuccessful results, though the body of one crew member was eventually recovered and interred in a U.S. cemetery in New Guinea. The remains of the other six crew members are still unaccounted for. Sergeant Harold Forrest Stowe, who entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Ohio, served with Marine Bombing Squadron 433 and was the turret gunner on board the Mitchell, and he was lost with the aircraft. His remains were not recovered following the incident. Today, Sergeant Stowe is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
