USS Capelin began its second war patrol on 17 November 1943, but was never heard from after it left for its patrol. Although Japanese records suggest an attack was made on 23 November, the information is incomplete, and the cause of USS Capelin’s loss is unknown. Machinist's Mate Third Class Jacobs was reported Missing in Action 15, December 1943 and officially declared dead 10 January 1946.
