Staff Sergeant Jacobs was the nose gunner on a B-24J Liberator heavy bomber, nicknamed "Queen of Angels," on a mission to drop supplies to British ground troops crossing the Rhine River near Wessel, Germany. The plane was hit by small arms and light artillery fire and crashed, killing eight of the nine crewmen.
