Mr. Jacobs writes, "...a hand grenade blew up near me and knocked me over. I was unable to get to the beach. The guy running next to me was killed. On the beach Pvt. Hinnent quickly disrobed and swam out to the boat. He told the Coxswain that he needed to get the rest of the Marines off the beach. The other boats followed him to the beach and picked us up and we returned to the base. At the end of the year my leg became infected. I was evacuated from Guadalcanal and sent to a Naval hospital in New Zealand."
