On 2 Aug 1942, Staff Sergeant Abadie was the bombardier on a B-17E Flying Fortress heavy bomber that took off from 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on a search mission for a convoy off Buna, Papua New Guinea. One or more Japanese Zeros attacked his plane, causing it to catch fire and enter a spin. Although at least five of the crew, including Staff Sergeant Abadie, were able to bail out, all but one crew member were declared Missing in Action. He was officially declared dead on 7 Jan 1946.
Staff Sergeant Abadie is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery in Taguig City, Philippines.
