On January 7, 1945, the 18th was engaged near Flamierge, Belgium, later known as The Battle for Dead Man's Ridge, where they would come up against a German counterattack that would push the division out of the town. During this attack, Logan manned a machine gun. At one point during the battle, he helped a wounded comrade back into his foxhole, only to lose his life when their position was hit by an enemy tank's artillery barrage.
