First Lieutenant Dinan was a pilot of a Number Two Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a strike mission over northern Laos. During the operation, the aircraft was hit by hostile fire, Dinan was seen parachuting out of the aircraft before it crashed. However, he did not survive. Witnesses confirmed his death, but his body could not be recovered due to the heavy enemy ground fire.
In August, 2017, the remains of First Lieutenant Dinan were accounted for. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C. on April 25, 2018. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial in Hawaii. A rosette has been placed next to his name signifying that he has been identified.
