Seaman Second Class Bolton was a crew member aboard the destroyer escort Leopold while the ship was at a screening station ahead of its convoy. The ship made radar contact with a U-boat and raced toward the site to attack when an acoustic torpedo fired by U-255 struck the ship, mortally wounding the vessel. Within minutes the ship broke in two, killing 171 members of the crew including Seaman Bolton. His name is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England.
