USS Callaway was struck by a kamikaze aircraft which crashed into the starboard wing of the ships bridge 8 January 1945. The crew was able to contain the damage so that USS Callaway could continue its mission during the Battle of Lingayen Gulf on January 9, 1945. Coxswain Blaney was wounded and died of his wounds the following day. He was buried at sea and his name is listed on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in Manila, Philippines.
