Machinist's Mate 1st Class Bonham was aboard the Coast Guard cutter Escanaba when the ship was sunk by an unknown explosion, 13 June 1943. The explosion killed all but two of the crew members. Petty Officer Bonham was among those lost and his name is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the East Coast Memorial, New York, New York
