Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class Abbey was wounded 13 January 1945 when his aircraft carrier was hit by a kamikaze airplane carrying two 250 kg bombs. He died of his wounds on 15 January 1945 and was buried at sea. His name is listed on the Walls of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery in Taguig City, Philippines.
