Lieutenant Colonel Smith was a Prisoner of war having been captured 7 May 1942. He was a prisoner in Cabantuan Prisoner of War camp until Octgober 1944. He was among 1,800 prisoners being transported to Japan on the Arisan Maru. U.S. Ships which sunk on the ship 24 Oct 1944, unaware that there were American prisoners aboard the vessel.
