Lieutenant Crotty was the first Coast Guard Prisoner of War since the War of 1812, being captured upon the fall of Corregidor. He was a prisoner at Cabanatuan prison until he lost his life to a diphtheria epidemic that swept through his camp. He was buried in the camp. After the War, the remains of those buried at the prison were re-interred at the Manila American Cemetery. Due to the conditions of those remains, they could not be identified at that time, and were listed as "unknowns". Modern DNA technology and other evidence resulted in Lt. Crotty being identified in September 2019. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawanna, NY, 2 November 2019. He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. A rosette has been placed by his name to indicate that he has been identified.
