Mike was a member of G Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He was a rifleman or grunt in a small unit that mostly stayed outside the wire. They were supposed to go out and "make contact" with the NVA and or the VC. He took part in Operation Cochise, and was wounded during Operation Medina. That day his squad was almost surrounded by a much larger NVA unit. They were hit hard. Mike was first shot and then blown up by a mortar. The wounds he sustained nearly killed him. He would spend the next decade recovering; going through more than 30 surgeries. Eventually, his entire right leg was amputated, and his right eye was removed. -Narrative Submitted with Enrollment.
