"Staff Sergeant, Operations NCO, and Expert Marksman Clarence Mervin Carlos of Company B, 1st Battalion, 362nd Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division was bravely wounded in action on September 20, 1944, sustaining a cerebral concussion and artillery shell shrapnel wounds to the left side of his head during the North Apennines Campaign amidst the Allied assault on the German Gothic Line, when Company B, 362nd Infantry Regiment was engaged in heavy, sustained mountain fighting to breach enemy fortifications near Monte Gazzaro and the Il Giogo Pass sector. Only one month after being wounded in action, Sergeant Clarence Carlos courageously returned to the frontlines to defend his brothers-in-arms in the push toward the Po Valley."
