Sergeant Chapman was part of a helicopter rescue team sent to retrieve the body of a Navy SEAL who had been killed in combat outside of Gardez, Afghanistan, after two MH-47 Chinook helicopters were hit by rocket propelled grenades. Sergeant Chapman died in a gun battle with Taliban and al-Qaida fighters when he aggressively fought off a numerically superior enemy force in order to allow his other team members to be safely extracted from the battle site.
