Sergeant Chapman was part of a helicopter rescue team sent to retrieve the body of a Navy SEAL who had been killed in combat outside of Gardez, Afghanistan, after two MH-47 Chinook helicopters were hit by rocket propelled grenades. Sergeant Chapman died in a gun battle with Taliban and al-Qaida fighters when he aggressively fought off a numerically superior enemy force in order to allow his other team members to be safely extracted from the battle site. Sergeant Chapman was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart for his heroic action. This narrative was researched and written by Hall of Honor staff.
