Private Weidert took part in the combat invasion of Omaha Beach on D-Day. Thereafter, serving as a machine gunner, he fought through the bocage (hedge row country) until he was seriously wounded during an assault on St. Lo. On that occasion he was shot in the back by a German Sniper who had just shot and killed three of Private Weidert's comrades as they tried to run through a break in one of the hedges.
