Group Visitation at the Hall of Honor

Group visits are welcome and encouraged at the Hall of Honor. Organized group visits fall in to two categories: Adult Groups and Educational Groups. Educational groups include schools, camps, Scouts and other organizations which serve student aged visitors.
All group visits of 10 or more individuals require advance reservations.

Please Note
New York State Historic Sites are largely accessible. Please let us know if anyone in your group has any mobility issues. If your group does have members with limited mobility, please let us know in advance and we can make arrangements to have the bus or car pull up to the back of the building as this is on level ground.

Bus Parking
There are several spaces reserved for buses in the parking lot in front of the building. Please do not leave buses engines idling.

Eating on Site
No food, drinks or chewing gum in the buildings please. In fair weather, there are picnic tables outside on our grounds. Please leave all food on the bus, or consult the staff about an appropriate area for storing them until lunch time. If you would like information on local restaurants, please speak with a staff member. No food or drinks are sold on site, but water fountains are available.

Photography Policy
Photographs and video images are for personal use only. Permission is required for all other uses of images taken at the facility.
Please feel free to take outdoor photographs.
Indoor photography is permitted without flash as the light from flashes can damage old and fragile artifacts.

Cancellations & Changes to Your Visit
If you must cancel or change any details of you visit (E.G., arrival time, number in group, etc). Please alert us as soon as possible by calling 845-561-1765 or 1-877-28HONOR. If possible, please speak directly with a member of the staff.

Adult Group Visits

  • Reservations are required with a minimum of two weeks advance notice for the date requested, and can be made by calling 845-561-1765, extension 28, or by emailing Peter Bedrossian.
  • We suggest that you allow approximately 90 minutes for the visit.
  • Groups may be booked between 10:00-3:30 Monday-Saturday, and between 1:00-3:30 p.m. on Sundays
  • Adult group visits include an introduction and orientation to the Hall of Honor, as well as a screening of the video "For Military Merit". For these group visits, staff are dedicated to the group for the visit and will provide enhanced interpretation of the Main Gallery as well as assist group members with searching the Roll of Honor. In addition, focused presentations can be tailored to the specific interests of the group, with advanced notice.   • Adult Group Visit Fee: $3.00 per person for organized group visits. The per person fee is applied to parties of 10 or more individuals. Payment can be made in advance, or on the day of the tour and the site can accept cash or checks for the fees. Checks should be made out to "State of New York OPRHP / NPHHOH" We ask that group leaders, please collect all fees to be paid for your group and present them to the staff person at the reception desk before your visit begins.

Educational Group Visits

School, Camp, Scout, Church Youth groups etc.

The Hall of Honor not only seeks to preserve the stories of Purple Heart recipients, but to educate visitors about the award and the recipients. Our "Soldiers Across Time" educational program looks at the evolution of the Purple Heart through the changing nature of America's military history as seen through the common soldier, sailor and airman. Group participants will learn about soldier life and equipment as they also compare the stories of Purple Heart recipients from the Civil War to the current time.

As an educational program, Soldiers Across Time" supports New York State Social Studies Standard 1, Key ideas 2, 4.

  • We suggest that you allow approximately 90 minutes for the visit.
  • Groups may be booked between 10:00-3:30 Monday-Saturday, and between 1:00-3:30 p.m. on Sundays
  • The program is tailored to the educational level of the group participants and has been offered to groups ranging from 3rd grade level through high school.

  • Educational Group Visit Fee: $3.00 per person for all attending the program (students, teachers, chaperones etc.). The per person fee is applied to parties of 10 or more individuals. Chaperone Policy
For groups of students/children, we require a ratio of 1 chaperone for every 10 children.

Gift Shop
The gift shop is located in the front entrance of the Hall of Honor. When visiting with students, please chaperone them in this area. Due to its small size, we recommend admitting no more than 6 students at a time into the shop, and ask that group chaperones oversee these logistics.

If you are also visiting the Cantonment's outdoor living history area, we suggest dressing for the weather (including footwear).

Museum Manners
If you are guiding or chaperoning groups of young visitors, please remind everyone before arrival of the following rules:

  • Please no touching objects on display, and no leaning on display cases
  • no gum, food or drink in the buildings
  • please silence cell phones while on tour

School Group

Directions

  • From I-87 (Thruway): Take exit 17 (Newburgh) and at the tollbooths follow the signs for Route 300, Newburgh. Take Route 300 South for approximately 3 .5 miles. The entrance to the Hall of Honor is on the left.
  • From I-84:Take Exit 7B Union Avenue, Route 300. Turn on to Route 300 South. Follow Route 300 for approximately 3 ½ miles. The entrance is on the left.
  • From south on Rt. 9W: Follow signs for Storm King Art Center onto County Rt. 107. Turn right onto Rt. 32 north to intersection with Rt. 94 and Rt. 300 in New Windsor. Follow Route 300 north for 1 mile. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is on the right.
  • From north on Rt. 9W: In Newburgh turn right onto Broadway, then left onto Rt. 32 and follow south to intersection with Rt. 94 and Rt. 300 at in New Windsor. Turn right onto Rt. 300 and follow north for 1 mile. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is on the right.
